Rowdy Bristol’s Surpac Training World Tour

If you and your team would like On-Site training in Surpac Geology Fundamentals or Resource Evaluation with Surpac, this is your chance to book Rowdy Bristol… our Surpac guru! Rowdy is based in the USA, and is about to embark on a Surpac training tour that will take him around the world in June and July this year.

If you haven’t had the pleasure of meeting Rowdy – here is a short bio about him:

Rowdy Bristol BSc (Construction Engineering), AAS (Land Surveying), MSc (Geological Engineering/Geostatistics), Post Grad Dip Computing
Rowdy is a geologist, engineer, and surveyor with postgraduate qualifications in geostatistics and computing. Rowdy has more than 21 years’ worldwide experience in the mining industry, plus 4 years’ experience working for a mining consultancy in the United States. Rowdy has worked as a mine geologist, engineer and surveyor and has trained geologists, engineers and surveyors in the use of Surpac Software at underground and open pit mines covering all major commodities. Apart from his guru-level expertise in Surpac, Rowdy’s skills are in resource evaluation, geostatistics, training, mine geology, engineering and surveying.

These are the courses that you can book to have Rowdy present as On-Site or In-House training for your team… wherever you are!

Resource Evaluation with Surpac course

(also available as a public course on 20-23 June in Perth)

This course has a 32 PD HOURS AusIMM rating

This practical 4-day Resource Evaluation with Surpac course uses a real-life data set to cover the resource evaluation cycle and its requirements. You will learn the key concepts related to the processes from data collection and quality assurance through to classification. These concepts are reinforced through a large number of practical activities, all using Surpac on a real-life data set. This course has been drawn from industry best practice and more than twenty years of estimation experience with Surpac.

Course Outline:

  • Introduction – flow of tasks, key Surpac concepts
  • Data quality – using Surpac to perform validation checks on input data
  • Geology and Domaining – geology of a real-life data set, basic wireframing techniques and validation, assigning domain codes to drillholes
  • Data preparation – compositing within domains, validating composites
  • Statistics – understanding and reporting statistical parameters, topcutting
  • Continuity – understanding and modelling variograms, using variogram maps to develop anisotropy ellipsoid parameters
  • Estimation – understanding different techniques, using Surpac to perform estimates, optimising estimation metrics (e.g. block size, number of samples)
  • Validation – using Surpac to validate a model against input data
  • Post-processing – understanding change of support and recoverable resources
  • Classification and reporting – understanding the Codes, using Surpac to assess and assign classification categories
  • Risk and uncertainty – understanding the basics of simulation, and when it is useful
  • Reconciliation – using Surpac to validate a resource model against grade control data

During the course attendees will:

  • Understand the workflow required to create, validate, and classify a resource in Surpac
  • Learn how to use Surpac to create and validate geological domains
  • Understand how to create composites from raw sample data in Surpac within a domain
  • Learn how to report and analyse statistical properties of a data set with Surpac
  • Use Surpac to identify and perform topcuts
  • Understand how to use Surpac’s variogram maps to define anisotropy ellipsoid parameters
  • Use Surpac to perform several different types of estimations
  • Learn the many ways to validate a resource model using Surpac
  • Appreciate the key criteria for resource classification, and how to use Surpac to assign resource categories

All attendees will receive FREE OREpack™ estimation manager software:

Optiro has developed add-on software modules which will improve your efficiency and offer functionality beyond Surpac’s normal functionality.
All attendees will receive a free copy of the OREpack Declus Optimiser, and a 30 day trial of any one of these OREpack modules for Surpac:

  • Kriging Neighbourhood Analysis
  • Localised Uniform Conditioning
  • Drillhole Spacing Optimiser
  • Estimation Manager

Please have a look at this short video where Rowdy shows you why OREpack Estimation Manager is the fastest and easiest way to create resource models in Surpac.

Surpac Geology Fundamentals course

(also available as a public course on 19 June in Perth)

This course has an 8 PD HOURS AusIMM rating

This practical 1-day course uses a real-life data set to cover the basics of using Surpac as a geologist. This course is highly recommended as a prerequisite for the Surpac Resource Estimation & Evaluation Course. You will learn about the fundamental concepts of Surpac’s interface, graphics environment, geology database, string files, DTM surfaces, solids modelling (wireframing), block modelling and macros. These concepts are reinforced through a large number of practical activities, all of which involve using Surpac on a real-life data set. This training course has been drawn from industry best practice as well as more than twenty years of Surpac experience.

Course outline:

  • Introduction – course overview, understand key outcomes and your goals
  • The Surpac Interface – understanding all of the main components and how to customise them to improve your efficiency
  • Surpac Data – how to display, import, export, and convert the most commonly used data types (e.g. strings, DTMs, CSV, other Geological Mining Software)
  • Macros – learn how to save time by creating, editing, and running Tcl scripts
  • String Editing – learn how to create, and modify strings in graphics and via file tools
  • Geology Database – understand database structure, how to create a database, as well as how to import, export, and display data
  • DTM Surfaces – learn how to create, view, display, contour, and report volumes
  • Solids Modelling – learn how to create, view, display, contour, and report volumes
  • Block Modelling – learn basic block model concepts such as sub-blocking, how to create and display a block model, import and export data, and generate grade-tonnage reports

During the course, you will learn:

  • all components of the Surpac interface, and how to customise them to your needs
  • about the structure and use of Surpac’s data types (e.g. string files, DTMs)
  • how to use the graphics environment to display, create and modify data
  • to import and export data to other formats
  • to create, view, and report volumes of DTM surfaces and solid models (wireframes)
  • to create contours from DTM surfaces and solid models
  • to create geological databases and block models
  • to import, export, display, and report data in a geology databases and block models
  • how to create, modify, and run macros to improve your efficiency using Surpac
