Understanding the importance of best practice sampling and the impact of sampling errors

This 1-day course will give you an understanding of the mine value chain from exploration through to production; what goes into making a mine; a review of exploration, resource definition and grade control sampling methods; splitting techniques; and the practical aspects of sampling errors.

Areas covered in this course include:

  • Discovery:
    Find anomalies (geochemical, geophysical, geological), test anomalies (drilling types and sample types); define resources (volume and grade estimation from data); define reserves (optimisation and cost considerations); production; open pit and underground mining methods and terminology.
  • Sampling:
    Exploration sampling methods (rock chip, channels, RAB, LAG); resource definition sampling methods (RC and DDH drilling); grade control sampling methods (open pit and underground), process control sampling (briefly) and QC samples.
  • Sampling errors and how to minimise them:
    Correct; incorrect; sub-sampling methods; core cutting; splitting methods; sampling blasthole cones; pulp and reject.
  • Ore control:
    Open pit (spotting, floor levels); underground (ore-tracking).
