Joel Cockman – Principal Mining Consultant, APAC

Joel is a Principal Consultant – Mining at Snowden Optiro, based in Perth, with over 25 years of experience in mine planning, optimisation and mining studies across iron ore, mineral sands, gold and base metals. He provides practical, high-quality technical advice to mining companies, supporting informed decision-making across the full life of mine.

Joel has held senior technical and leadership roles with major mining organisations including Rio Tinto Iron Ore, Fortescue Metals Group and Iluka, where he has led life-of-mine and medium-term planning, feasibility studies, mine design and optimisation projects. His expertise also includes strategic scheduling, financial evaluation, and the technical assessment of decarbonisation pathways, including electric haulage and equipment modelling. Known for his clear communication and strong problem-solving skills, Joel focuses on optimisation, risk management and delivering robust, implementable study outcomes for clients.
